Why Your Cosmetic Choices Matter

What we put on and around our eyes can have a huge impact on how comfortable our eyes feel during the day. Mascara, eyeliner, eye shadow & concealer can exacerbate dry eye disease. Make up can easily migrate into the tear film and clog the glands at the base of the lower eyelid. This makes it impossible for the tears to be released to hydrate the eyes.


There are several things that can be done to limit the effect make up has on dry eye symptoms (besides going au natural!)

1) Removing ALL make up before bed


If the glands remain clogged for a prolonged amount of time eventually the eyes will stop making tears and the glands will atrophy. We have tried several eye make up removers and our doctors consistently prefer Purifeyed as the best eye make up remover. 2) Losing the powder 


The small particles in powder eye shadows, concealers and bronzers can end up clogging the glands that make tears. This can lead to a cloudy tear film because those small particles end up in the tear film. We recommend cream based eye shadows and concealers/foundation.


3) Say no to tight-lining & baking


If you are not familiar with either of these terms - you are not alone! 

Tight lining is applying eye-liner ABOVE the lower lash line directly on the tear glands. If you've been paying attention - you know that this is not good for tear quality AND quantity. 


If you're feeling adventurous and want to google Make Up Baking there are plenty of tutorials. Essentially it involves layers of make up, wet sponges, powder and setting spray. The skin under the eye is extremely thin and using that many layers of make up can easily migrate up to the lower eyelid and into the eyes themselves. 


4) Bye Bye Dirty Dozen


Unfortunately the skin care industry is the wild west when it comes to regulations. The dirty dozen is a list of toxic chemicals that are all too commonly found in beauty products. When choosing make up do your best to avoid brands that contain:

  • Perfumes

  • Phthalates

  • Formaldehyde derivatives

  • Parabens

5) Keep It Clean


Make sure your make up brushes are washed regularly and any pencil applicators are sharpened 


6) Under Eye Hydration


The skin under our eyes is one of the thinnest of our body - no wonder it doesn't take much for it to wrinkle or show how well we've slept the night before.

In keeping the eye hydrated you want to use products that have moisturizers such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycerides and even aloe vera.


Keep it simple by steering clear of products with excessive ingredients (including fragrance) and make sure the cream/gel/serum is noncomedogenic (does not clog pores) and is designed for the eye area.

7) No Need for Waterproof Mascara


There is a couple of really great reasons to stick with regular mascara and leave the waterproof version on the shelf.

  • It does not come off well - regardless of the make up remover you use. This means more debris will be left on your eyelashes, clogging the glands and allowing more debris to end up in your tear film!

  • The skin in and around the eye is so thin and delicate, scrubbing off mascara on a nightly basis will definitely speed up the development of fine lines & wrinkles.
